Roulette in London

Roulette
In terms of Cities and
Roulette, London certainly qualifies in the top two or three
locations worldwide. Roulette in London is a serious business and exists as the main
gambling feature of virtually all casinos. With over 40 casinos, almost all
located with in a mile or so from the centre of London (The West End~
Piccadilly) and with an average of about 7 or 8 roulette wheels per casino it’s
easy to see why London stands very high on the list of roulette cities.
In addition, London offers exclusively European Roulette with a house advantage of 2.7% compared to
the American version of the roulette game costing players a very large 5.2%
house edge.
Gambling in London has been around for centuries, even going back to the days of king Henry VIII
who was said to have had a passion for dice.
Later on and during the
1680’s King Charles II enforced the shutting down of all illegal gambling
houses.Neal St. was named after Tomas Neal who had been assigned
with the task of dealing with the illegal gambling dens of London.
Today’s Cromwell Mint Casino is said to have been built on the location of the
original royal mint set up by Oliver Cromwell
More than 100 years
later, in 1828 the first real casino in London was set up by
William Crockford in Curzon street and as London’s oldest casino it is also it’s most Exclusive. I
played there myself a number of years back and it was a very relaxed and calm
type of place, as one might expect.
Moving forward to the
next century came the era of East End Involvement in gambling, most notably the
Kray Twins who in the 1950’s owned a highly successful casino in London’s
exclusive Knightsbridge. Who knows what they may have been up to, but whatever
it was it was very profitable, or at least it was until Reggie, the driving
force behind the business, was sent to prison. It was down hill from there
because either brother Ronnie was not good at business or because the Kray Twin
empire was undergoing an erosion of credibility.
Gambling did not become
legal until the 1960’s when a license was granted to the Claremont club in Berkley Square. By the 70’s some casinos were embroiled in
alleged violation of the Gaming law, which concluded in the dramatic withdrawal
of the Playboy Casino Licence on the 5th October 1981.
Players need to be at
least 18 years old to enter a UK Casino and demonstrate a photographic form of
identification. The old rule of having to wait a day before playing has now
been removed. Also new to the game in recent years is the option to give tip,s
which was previously prohibited.
One strong
characteristic of the roulette game is the
widespread availability of the Neighbour style of betting which is a five
number section on the roulette wheel and highly favoured by the professional
roulette player. In more recent times a three number section bet is becoming
more and more available too.

London casinos cater for all types of roulette players and
the dress code will often reflect the status of a particular club. Casino Club
memberships are often free, though there are several that may charge anything
from £10 to £1000 for a life membership. I have heard that some memberships
have fallen in recent years.
Professional Roulette
players enjoy the game in London as it has such a large variety and number of
roulette wheels to check out. Professionals have done fairly well over the
years in London and of course there was the Ritz casino sting which
occurred on another less than random roulette wheel.
Roulette players can
expect mainly wheels manufactured by John Huxley and Cammegh, two of the best
known UK companies in the roulette wheel manufacture
business. For specialists of the game, the Huxley Starburst, The Huxley Mark IV
& V. and the Cammegh Classic will be the most commonly found roulette wheel
types in London
